The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has issued an update on Severe Thunderstorm Watch 599, indicating that the threat of severe weather persists across parts of south central and southeastern Nebraska, adjacent southwestern Iowa, and northwestern Missouri. The ongoing cluster of storms, which has evolved from an initial supercell structure, may continue to pose risks for severe hail and wind through the early afternoon.

Current Storm Dynamics

The broader cyclonic vortex associated with the storm system has developed over the past few hours, with thunderstorm activity maintaining a south-southeastward movement. However, recent data from the Rapid Refresh model suggests that the initial warm advection supporting ascent may weaken in the coming hours. This could lead to increasing mid-level inhibition and less unstable inflow, potentially diminishing convection on the southern and southwestern edges of the cluster.

Potential for Renewed Convection

Despite the uncertainty in the storm's evolution, a corridor of stronger destabilization has emerged downstream of the ongoing cluster. This area, located near and southwest of Omaha, as well as south of Interstate 80 into southwestern Iowa, has shown Convective Available Potential Energy (CAPE) values ranging from 1500 to 2000 J/kg. This destabilization appears to be focused near the northern periphery of the elevated mixed-layer, as indicated by the thermal gradient around the 700 mb level.

The Mesoscale Convective Vortex (MCV) within the west-northwesterly mean flow may shift southward, potentially supporting renewed convective development through the early afternoon. Forcing associated with the MCV or the surface cold pool could contribute to this renewed activity.

Expected Impacts

The most probable peak wind gusts associated with the storms are forecasted to be between 55 and 70 mph. Additionally, hail sizes ranging from 1.00 to 1.75 inches are expected. Residents in the affected areas should remain vigilant and prepared for potential severe weather conditions.
